What unity actually is
When people say "you know good design when you see it", the eight principles are what they're seeing. Unity is the whole of it. A graphic has unity when you can't move or remove anything without making it worse, and nothing looks like it wandered in from a different graphic. When something feels off and you can't say why, it's usually one element breaking the system everything else set up.
Cover each element with your thumb, one at a time. If the graphic looks better without something, it doesn't belong. If it looks worse, it's earning its place.
Three steps to get it right
Find the odd one out
One font, color, photo style or decoration that nothing else on the graphic uses. Change it to match, or cut it.
Run the eight in order
Balance, color, hierarchy, alignment, repetition, proximity, white space, type. Most graphics fail on one or two, not all eight.
Use the screenshot loop
Let AI do the first critique against the eight principles, then you make the call.
Where AI gets it wrong
AI doesn't have eyes. It can't see what it makes, so it can't spot the one thing that doesn't belong. Pasting a long list of design rules into your prompt won't fix that. What does work: show it a screenshot of the result, ask it to check its own work against the principles, then have it revise.
The screenshot loop, step one. Take a screenshot of your graphic, attach it, and paste this:
Here is a screenshot of a graphic. Critique it against these 8 design principles: balance, color and contrast, hierarchy, alignment, repetition, proximity, white space and typography. For each one, say in one sentence whether it is working and, if not, exactly what to change. Then name the one element that does not belong. Do not redesign anything yet.
Name the problem in design words and give it one clear change:
“Now revise it using only your top three fixes. Keep everything else exactly as it is.”
- Screenshot your latest graphic and run the critique prompt.
- Apply the top three fixes, not all of them.
- Make the final call yourself. AI can check the list, but you are the one who can see it.
